Sed homoj kun homoj: la pluretna intuicio de Zamenhof estas seminario Grundtvig

La 17an de novembro 2011 la Itala Nacia Agentejo de la Programo de
Tutviva Lernado komunikis la aprobon de seminario Grundtvig, proponita
de la Itala Instituto de Esperanto, kun la temo «Sed homoj kun homoj:
la pluretna intuicio de Zamenhof».
La seminario okazos de la 18a ĝis la 25a de aŭgusto 2012 en la sicila
urbo Mazaradelvalo, kadre de la 79a Kongreso de Esperanto en Italio.
Ĝi estos financita per 36.120 € kaj ĝi analizos la aktualecon de la
pensadoj de Zamenhof, kun granda atento al multkulturismo kaj al
pluretna mondo, kun rektaj ligoj al Esperanto-spertoj.

Denove ĝojiga sukceso por Kosmo, esperantista entrepreno kiu prizorgis
la pretigon de la projektpropono, kunlabore kun IIE. «Per tiu ĉi plia
sukceso ni pliproksimiĝas al la ronda cifero de 200.000 € akiritaj por
Esperanto-agado» komentis Bruĉjo Kasini, kun-direktoro de Kosmo kaj
jam konata esperantisto ankaŭ per la eldonejo Edistudio. Prof.
Fabrizio A. Pennacchietti, prezidanto de IIE, komentis: «Tiu ĉi
sukceso montras ke Esperanto-organizoj havas la eblecon akiri
subvenciojn por financi siajn agadojn. Ĝi estas rekono de la plurjara
agado de IIE en la kampo de plenkreska edukado. Ni atendas vin en
Mazaradelvalo!»

Kosmo Strategio Ltd. estas skota esperantista entrepreno, kiu celas
helpi la Esperanto-mondon akiri subvenciojn, mastrumi projektojn,
plani agadojn. Oficiale registrita en aprilo 2011, ĝi havas kvar
kunlaborantojn kaj havas rilatojn kun dekoj da organizoj,
universitatoj kaj mal-mez-grandaj entreprenoj – ne nur Esperantistaj.
Lastan monaton ĝi ĵus lanĉis partneran projekton inter Svisa
Esperanto-Societo, Kataluna Esperanto-Asocio, Germana Esperanto-Asocio
kaj Esperanto-France, financita per 69.000 €.
«Mi estas tre feliĉa ne nur kiel entreprenisto, sed ĉefe kiel
esperantisto! La kongreso en Mazaradelvalo estos granda ŝanco por
relanĉi la Esperanto-movadon en Sicilio, kun favora subteno de la
urbaj instancoj. Tiu ĉi subvencio certe helpos.» aldonis Francesco
Maurelli, kun-direktoro de Kosmo.

Un accademico a #Librinnovando

Venerdì scorso ho partecipato come uditore a Librinnovando 2011, contagiato dall’entusiasmo sul mondo degli ebook da Mauro Sandrini che mi ha folgorato con il suo Elogio degli ebook.

Ho appena autopubblicato un romanzo breve di fantascienza intitolato Mary Everest e il Mistero del Pantelegrafo con Narcissus SBF che a mio avviso hanno fatto centro. Chi mi segue sa che ho avuto il mio bel da fare a convertire il LaTeX in ePub. E si tratta di un testo senza formule matematiche… Be’, ho scoperto che Il Mulino ha un percorso specifico di produzione per LaTeX, e che Springer ci sta lavorando. Il che, francamente, fa piacere.

Non è di certo un problema solo mio. Infatti, uno spazio notevole della giornata è stato dedicato al settore educational, dalla scuola all’Università, dove gli ebook sembrano più promettenti. Anche se in alcune comunicazioni più che di ebook si trattava dei buoni vecchi ipermedia che studiavo a Scienze della Comunicazione negli anni 1990 — solo con il web in più.

La giornata è stata per me molto interessante, perché non mi capita spesso di partecipare a convegni non accademici. In generale l’organizzazione è stata più che buona: peccato mancassero i fondamentali coffee break dove conosci le persone faccia a faccia.

In parte la cosa è stata compensata dall’uso per me intensivo di Twitter: l’hashtag #Librinnovando è diventato top nella giornata! Era buffo: un po’ ricordava i vecchi bigliettini di scuola, quando parlavi alle spalle dei prof, un po’ ci si twittava da una stanza all’altra con esperienza di bilocazione, un po’ ancora si facevano domande ai relatori, peraltro non raccolte (ma non era stato pensato in precedenza).

Sicuramente il settore è vivace, c’è fermento, ci sono idee, ci sono esperienze da condividere, anche insuccessi, a volte.

Bello, bello. Ho imparato molto. Peccato aver perso la sessione sui BookBloggers, pazienza.

Adventures from LaTeX to epub: a follow up

This is a follow up of a previous post. Please read the first post before if you didn’t already.

There were a couple of problems in publishing my selfpublished ePub from LaTeX with SPF Narcissus. They are really kind and professional! Substantially, the validation tool of Sigil is not good enough for the metadata. It is far better to validate through Three Press, which gives a sharp check of your file.

What I had to do was to convert my TeX source file through SimpleTeX4ht in XHTML as a single file, and then split chapters manually in Sigil. An hour work, not more, not less.

I had to modify metadata, in particular author, title, language, and checking TOC, which is still not perfect but valid.

Next time I will do even better…

How to make an ePub from LaTeX

I’ve got interested in the production of ePub from LaTeX, and I realized that this topic is surprisingly not well covered yet on the web by now, so I will share my experience here. The goal was to publish a short story, called Mary Everest and the Mystery of the Pantelegraph (a steampunk short story written in Italian and currently under translation) which I have written in XeLaTeX for more font flexibility.

Of course, all with free software. No licences, no dependencies on third parts. Only you, your text, your ability and enthusiasm!

Caveat: the main limit in my current experience is that there is no math formulas in my short story, and so I couldn’t really test how ePub cope with this known problem. Anyhow.

First, after writing the first draft on pen and paper (warmly suggested if you are used to academic writing!) I put into bits & LaTeX through my beloved Aquamacs (Emacs clone for Mac).

Then, I converted all the source in XHTML by SimpleTeX4ht.

Then, you should import your XHTML files into Sigil, the best ePub editor I’ve found. Not all editors let you edit the source, in most cases they call them “editors” but they are really only batch converters (!). With Sigil you can keep your text in control.

Finally, while not strictly needed, if you want to convert your ePub in a Mobi (for Kindles, for instance) you can always use Calibre, a very good ebook manager for your reader.

La projekto pri libera aŭtomata tradukado Apertium, kie funkcias diversaj tradukiloj el kaj al Esperanto ( http://apertium.saluton.dk/?lang=eo ), estis elektita por la dua fojo por la konkurso Google Code-In – nur anglalingve.

Apertium staras apud Gnome, FreeBSD, OpenSUSE aŭ KDE inter la 18 projektoj elektitaj de Google por sia konkurso por junaj programantoj inter 13 kaj 17 jaroj. La aranĝo celas instigi ilian partoprenon en projektoj de libera/malfermitkoda programaro.

Tamen, ĉar Apertium kunigas programadon kaj lingvon, ĝi proponos multajn taskojn alireblajn por lingvemaj junuloj nenion sciantaj pri programado. Krome, ĉar en Apertium aktivas pluraj esperantistoj, ĝi proponos dudekon da taskoj rilataj al Esperanto, kiel la kreadon de vortaroj en Apertium-formato surbaze de la Reta Vortaro, la plibonigon de la dokumentado en Esperanto kaj pri Esperanto-tradukiloj, la plibonigon de la ekzistantaj Esperanto-tradukiloj kaj la sisteman komparadon de Esperanto kun aliaj lingvoj, helpontan la disvolvon de novaj Esperanto-tradukiloj.

La konkurso komenciĝos la 21 de novembro kaj finiĝos la 16an de januaro.

I am going to fly to Brussels so to reach Ghent, in Belgium, as tomorrow the first international conference about History and Philosophy of Computing (HAPOC) will start. That means I will not answer email or social networking messages quickly as usual. Please be patient.

My dreamt Doctor Who episode: The Bombe

I had the following dream about a new Doctor Who episode.

TARDIS is coming in an English park, during the night. The Doctor and Amy Pond go out of it.

-Doctor! Where are we now? It seems England.
-Yes, Amy!
-Doctor! Why are we here now?
-It’s a surprise! (laughing)

They arrive in front of a building, called Alan Turing Museum. They enter. There is a tour for
an elementary school. The teacher is giving explanations: “here you can see some original papers
by Alan Turing written during the Second World War…” Amy is looking here and there, the Doctor
goes straight away without worrying about the surroundings. The camera follows the Doctor.

They arrive in a big room. Amy is almost running behind the Doctor.

-Doctor! I want to know where the damn we are and when!

But Doctor’s face is not happy anymore.

-Something got wrong.

The camera shows what the Doctor has just seen. Turing’s Bombe is no longer an electromechanical device, but is clearly of alien origin! The Doctor starts to run, with Amy behind. She is quarreling but the Doctor does not care.

-We’ve got to go back to the TARDIS, before it’s too late! says the Doctor.

They run out of the museum, but the TARDIS is currently being taken away by a police car.

-Hey! Listen! This is mine! Let me explain!

But TARDIS is being brought in a hangar, where a lot of phone boxes come from all over the world (Italian, Irish, and so on…) can be seen for a moment.

A policeman is stopping Doctor’s run.

-I’m sorry, Sir. No parking here for time weapons.

-Time weapons?!?
